It's hard-hat Dave! Actually, we all looked like construction workers because we were being given a hard-hat tour of New Central while it was still under construction in August 2003. Let's go inside!
We're right in front of the elevators on the first floor, looking toward the Children's Department. Fourth Ave is to the left.
Now I've turned around, and we're looking at Borrower Services' area.
The conveyor belt system had already been installed on the first floor.
We're still on the first floor. This is looking up through the space that will become the auditorium.
Now we're on the fifth floor looking down toward the Fifth Ave entrance on the third floor.
Same spot, now looking toward the corner where the Teen Desk will go.
Straight down, this is the area between the top of the auditorium and the elevators on the third floor. The new book shelves, the DVD collection, and the recorded books will go in this area.
The 5th floor Mixing Chamber. Straight back to the left will be the computer "casino." Note that the raised, silver aluminum floor has not yet been installed.
Now we're approaching the unfinished wall that will separate the public part of the 5th floor from the GRS workroom.
This area is where all our desks will be. Again, note that the raised floor has not yet been installed.
This is Quick Information's corner. I think this was the moment I first realized we were going to have a problem with the sunlight here!
Looking down the hall toward our staff restrooms. Our workroom sink, cabinets, and refrigerator will be installed on the tan wall at left.
Turning around and looking toward QIC's corner again. Our individual desks will go between the pillars and the wall at right.
The Mixing Chamber reference desk will go right in front of the unfinished wall seen here with the pillars wrapped in plastic. Those pillars are the window frames, and the Legrady video art installation will be above the windows at top.
This is the trench, across from the top of the escalators.
Now we're on the fourth floor, which hasn't been completely enclosed yet, looking down on the third floor and the top opening of the auditorium.
Now we're on the third floor, looking up at the fourth floor.
Standing about where the third floor Circ desk will go.
Third floor circ desk area, looking up toward the Mixing Chamber.
Third-floor Circ desk area. Note how the fourth floor hasn't been completely enclosed at the far end yet.
On the other side of the third floor, standing about where the Teen Desk will go.
Standing by the elevator shaft on the third floor, looking toward Fifth Ave. Note the construction crane that still extended all the way up the atrium.
