We spent Saturday night at the Marriott Hotel in downtown New Orleans (seen here), but we had a bit of a fiasco getting from the airport to the hotel. Unbeknownst to us, the annual Bayou Classic football game between Grambling State University and Southern University (known as "Black America's biggest football game") was played in the Superdome earlier that day. Huge post-game parties were going on downtown, and many streets were blocked off. Our cab driver (who didn't speak enough English to effectively communicate what was going on) got us as close to the hotel as possible, but we had to walk with our luggage about 10 blocks right through the middle of all the reverie of Bourbon Street. Not fun, to say the least!! At the hotel, they told us that this is the largest event in the city outside of Mardi Gras each year. Rather than venturing out like we had planned, we decided to eat at the hotel and turn in early.
